Amnesty International is the worldwide human rights organisation which is privileged to have received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 and the United Nations Prize for Human Rights in 1978. In the West Midlands Region of England there are many activists and plenty of opportunities for people with a concern for human rights to get involved.

Amnesty International's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. Amnesty International's mission is to undertake research and action focussed on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression and freedom from discrimination within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

The West Midlands Region of AIUK consists of 26 Groups, Student Groups, Trade Union Affiliates and thousands of individual members. The Plan for 2008 is to continue the development our area team, to focus and to support the campaigning work of the Groups in the region, work with partners where we have shared objectives bring these together to work on the issues below. The Regional Representative charged with communications and links between groups is Simon Ware who would be interested in hearing from individuals or networks.

Our priorities for 2008 are our work on the Stop Violence Against Women campaign, Terrorism, Security and Human Rights issues, and undertaking action for individuals at risk. A particulaly topical issue in 2008 will be human rights in China - especially in the lead up to the Olympic Games in August.
